R Family Cruise - July 2008?

I never thought I’d voluntarily want to subject myself to a cruise full of children (I like kids, but I don’t generally think of them as peaceful additions to a vacation), but I think it would be cool to see all those kids with their gay parents.  Together, not having to hide anything or fear anyone.  It’s like the first time I went to Gay Pride in West Hollywood.  The parade was okay, but except for the Santa Claus Lane Parade every year when I was a child, parades weren’t really my thing, and Pride parades with topless (and let’s be honest, sometimes scary looking) lesbians on motorcyles, men dancing on floats sponsored by bars…seeing it on tv is really enough.  However, the festival afterwards is great!  A huge area where you don’t have to be afraid to hold anyone’s hand (hell, we held hands with just friends…because we could) or kiss your partner or change your pronouns when you’re talking about them at work, is just amazing.  It’s hard to get back the feeling of the very first one, when you realize that you can be yourself in a crowd of thousands, without being in a bar.  Plus, the food and music are always great.  So, I was watching Rosie’s video of snapshots of people on the last R Family cruise, and I want to go!  I don’t like the song, so maybe put on a nice song of your choice.  Watch it, and then let’s plan a vacation together.  Straight people are welcome too, so let’s go on the New England & Canada cruise next summer, okay?  It leaves from NY, then goes to Halifax, Nova Scotia; Saint John, New Brunswick; Bar Harbor, Maine; Provincetown, Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island, and then back to NY.  It’s pretty much the same cruise I’ve wanted to go on already, but I think I’d like the atmosphere better.  Plus, I think they get more interesting entertainment, because they get some big names going.

So, who else wants to go?  I have both straight and gay readers with kids, and they’re people I’ve never met and would like to.  Wouldn’t it be fun to plan it for next year?  Of course, I’m poverty-stricken right now, but it’s a whole year away.  We can all save up, and I can bribe my nephews to take care of the pets.  Or, we can save up to pay a vet tech or something, so my nephews can go on the cruise too.  So, bring your kids, bring your parents, bring your spouse or partner, bring your siblings…

  1. I really want to go on one of these cruises.  I’d love it, and my daughter would LOVE to go.  She feels alone, sometimes, like she’s the only child of a gay mom.

  4. Honestly, I’m not at all interested in a cruise with only lesbians.  I really dislike the separatist attitude (the Michigan Womyn’s Fest…the last place on earth I’d want to vacation, for instance), and I know that there would be women like that on an Olivia cruise.  I’d rather be on a cruise that’s meant for gay people, but where straight people feel welcome.  Because, if I’m going on a cruise, I want to know that all of my friends and family members could come, if they wanted.  Also, I’ve wanted to do the New England cruise for a long time.
