June 30, 2006 - The Day I Stopped Being A Maple Leafs Fan

(June 30, 2006)—John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the club has bought out the contract of forward Tie Domi (or Voldemort) and have elected not to exercise the option year on the contract of goaltender Ed Belfour.

“We want to thank Tie (or Voldemort) for his many years of service to the organization,” said Ferguson.  “He became a fan favourite for a reason and we wish him well in the years ahead.”

  1. I AM MOST DISPLEASED.

  2. This is the same team which scratched Ron Francis in the last game of his incredible hockey career, so we can’t be too surprised.  I feel sorry for Belfour, because his career has really ended with a fizzle, but the way they’ve treated Tie Domi is incredibly disrespectful and unnecessary.

  3. Are you going to put a red slash through your jersey, too? Love the graphic!

Sorry for the bad news. :(

PS) I see you are also getting the 103 degree weather. Whhhooo!

  4. The only Leafs jersey in the house is Leigh-Ann’s, so no red slash.  I did take the Maple Leafs hockey puck antenna topper off the car this morning.  Perhaps I’ll replace it with a Dodgers’ antenna topper.

I’m worse than mad, I’m sad.  I became a hockey fan so very late (the season before the lockout), so I only got two seasons of Tie. :(

Pshaw, 103 is mild here.  Earlier in the week when it was 112, that was bad.  109 and below is usually tolerable, it’s those 110+ days that get to me.  The air conditioning in the house can’t even keep up - if we have it set at 77, it’ll only make it to 79.

  5. I know nothing about the careers of hockey players, but won’t he probably get hired by another team somewhere?

  6. He’s kind of in a unique situation.  He’s an enforcer and he’s getting older.  Most enforcers don’t last as long as he has because fighting and slamming into people isn’t the easiest thing on a player’s body.  Also, he made it clear that he wanted to retire as a Leaf.  He’s from Toronto, his family is in Toronto, and he wanted to stay there.

I hope that he changes his mind and plays for another team.  I feel cheated.  Like Helly, I became a hockey fan because of Tie.  I was already cheated out of last season because of the lockout, but I knew that he’d signed a two year contract before this season, so I figured I had at least another year.  I didn’t figure on John Ferguson, Jr. being an asshole.  Clearly, I overestimated him.

  7. Domi was a goof and a goon, good riddance!
