I Could’ve Been Bamboozled by JT LeRoy
But, until today, I’d never heard of him. It does appear that in the past, I met his precursor (whether they know each other or not, I don’t know), Anthony Godby Johnson. I’d exchanged a couple of innocuous emails with Tony in the early 90’s. The terrible childhood stories and the charming of celebrities is strikingly similar. If any of you have read either “Anthony’s” autobiography, A Rock and a Hard Place or Armistead Maupin’s The Night Listener: A Novel
...you’ll get flashbacks when you read this from JT LeRoy’s website.
It sounds like Susie Bright was snakebit, just like Armistead Maupin was by Tony Johnson. Also, there was a completely different woman (I’m assuming) scamming Rosie O’Donnell - you can read about her in Rosie’s book, Find Me.

So how was it that you exchanged emails with the non-existent Tony?

Well, he existed, but probably as a woman. Also, an adult, who didn’t have AIDS, who wasn’t prostituted to his parents’ friends, who pulled the wool over thousands (millions?) of people’s eyes. Anyway, “he” was on AOL and I saw his user name not long after I’d read the book. I thought I’d say hi and see how he was doing. He was fine, as a matter of fact.
The boy who should’ve died, lived long enough to take his book money and disappear into the sunset. It’ll be interesting to see how The Night Listener is made in a movie. I’ve always hoped that more information was found and that the mystery could be solved. Surely when you bamboozle a bunch of rich people, they can hire a private investigative team to figure out the whole thing...I’d think.

that just reminded me of an internet hoax I read about - did you ever hear of Joan? This woman who was supposedly disabled and disfigured who garnered all this sympathy and friendship online - she even hooked up one woman friend with her psychologist, a man, who was actually - her.
That’s strange that the Tony mystery was never solved. Maybe the people involved were too emotionally involved to really want to know.
