-$815.34 - Yeah, This Is The Total I Want To See In My Bank Account

In my life, I have NEVER bounced a check.  I’ve never even come close.  Tonight, I went to pay my bills online and I got a shock I so did not need.  It said that my checking account was $815.34 overdrawn, plus there was an overdraft charge of $22, AND the available amount in my savings account was $0.  Now, I’ll be the first one to tell you that my bank account is not loaded with money right now, but there are thousands of dollars missing.  Sadly, not tens or hundreds of thousands, but it is thousands, and I didn’t spend it.  I would’ve accepted that it was a weird late night computer glitch, except for the overdraft charge and the missing money from my savings account.  I called my bank, but she said that she can’t really see anything until after they update at 8am tomorrow.  Ordinarily, not such a big deal.  I rarely write any checks because I pay all of my bills online and in person generally use my debit card; however, I have one check outstanding, for my car payment.  One other weird thing - I went to pick up my Lyrica prescription tonight (that was going to be another rant, as my insurance is refusing to cover it and it’s not cheap) at Smith’s.  Then, after paying for the prescription at the pharmacy with my debit card, I also used the debit card for a few groceries.  So, that’s two separate transactions that went through tonight, yet they’re saying I’m $800 in the hole.  My overdraft protection wouldn’t have covered me being that much in the hole, so none of it makes sense.  But man, it’s crappy.  I was already on edge today money-wise and this was pretty much the last thing that I needed.

So, only seven hours and fifteen minutes to find out where thousands of dollars disappeared to.  Wheeeeee.

Update 2:10am - Wait, it gets better, now it’s at -$1,168.80.  If I keep checking, maybe my negative balance can pay for the war in Iraq.

  1. It’s weird how money just goes missing and absolutely nobody is to blame.

  2. EEEK! Maybe a deposit went missing? I had something similiar occur once when the bank put a 10-day hold on a large deposit, which wouldn’t have been an issue had anyone decided to, I dunno, TELL ME about it.  Like maybe when I was face-to-face with the teller handing over the deposit inside the institution live and in person, that would have been a good time.

    Hope you get it sorted.

  3. OMG. I hope this gets resolved ASAP. Of course, the banks are probably in the “Gee, we don’t really want to do any heavy-duty sleuthing right now because we are off for Thanksgiving and so let’s just put this off ‘til Monday when even more thousands will be missing” mindset.

But perhaps you have a cool bank.

    Good luck.

  4. It’s gotta be a glitch with the online banking system, since they let you use your debit card.  Still, that’s probably a shock to your system you don’t need right now.  I remember what it was liked when Amazon.com got hacked and my debit card was suddenly laundering money through an offline gambling site.  That’s scary shit.

  5. Holy crap, I’d absolutely shit if I saw my bank account depleting like that for no reason. I’d be camped out on the front steps of the bank with bug-eyes by the time they opened up in the morning..
