101 Things About Me

Apparently I’ve been boring my dad, as I took a day off in writing.  So now, because lots of other people have done it and I’m a blogging follower, I’m going to let you know a bit about me.  You know, other than my rants.

1.  My real name is not Flippy.

2.  I’m gay.  Or maybe bi.  I think some boys are cute.  I probably wouldn’t be miserable living as a het.

3.  I love chocolate/raspberry anything.

4.  If I wasn’t living with Leigh-Ann , I’d probably only have one dog and maybe one African Grey to keep me company.

5.  I love sushi.  Especially anything with tobiko on it.  (hey, is this cheating, adding extra stuff to a response?  Screw it.  It’s my blog, man)

6.  I was once a jock.  Played high school & college softball.

7.  If professional softball had existed, I would’ve worked out harder.

8.  I’m lazy.

9.  I’m unambitious, although I desperately want to make lots of money.

10.  I have ideas almost every single day on how to make money, but not enough money or skill to make them happen.

11.  I have three older brothers.

12.  I always wanted a little brother.

13.  I never wanted a sister.

14.  Compared to just about everyone I know...my childhood was perfect.

15.  I’m stubborn and hate to be wrong.

16.  I won’t argue if I’m not almost positive I’m right.

17.  I don’t like to argue in real life, but I generally don’t mind arguing online.

18.  I’ve proven to myself that I can walk away from unhealthy online arguing.  (Yes, this means you at Mama-Drama - I never came back after my last post)

19.  I don’t want children.

20.  I think other people’s children are great...especially online.

21.  I’m a homebody.

22.  I love television...and always have.

23.  I love television even more now that we have TiVo

24.  I like spicy food.

25.  I love trying new foods.

26.  I like almost every food, but I don’t like lima beans or most Indian food.

27.  I took one set of ice skating lessons when I was four or five. (will update the age when I ask my mom)

28.  My ice skating career never took off, possibly because during our first show, we were on the ice too long and I had to pee.  So, I did.  Right there, on the ice.  I had to tell you that before my brother could.

29.  I hate not being good at anything athletic.

30.  I can’t dance.

31.  I hate clubs and hate it even more if someone asks me to dance.

32.  I went through an experimental drug phase for about a week when I was 17.  If my dad reads this far, I was almost 18 and out of high school.

33.  I don’t like anything that makes me hyper, so you can imagine why my drug phase of 1982 was very very short.

34.  I have a tendency to try to help strangers.

35.  I must have guilt from my happy childhood.

36.  Or maybe it’s from being a Jew.  (cultural, non-religious though)

37.  My mother is a Holocaust survivor.

38.  I have a fondness for many things Canadian, even though I’ve only been there once...briefly, on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

39.  My gf is Canadian.  So is my Maple Leaf boyfriend, Tie Domi (or Voldemort).

40.  I don’t really consider Tie Domi (or Voldemort) my boyfriend, you know, if anyone who knows him is reading this.  But he has a cute smile when he’s beating the crap out of people.

41.  I loved living in San Francisco.

42.  Even though I’m gay, the only gay clubs I went to when I lived in SF were two men’s clubs with my friend Scott...both in the same night.

43.  I think watching the fog roll through the middle of San Francisco is one of the coolest sights ever.

44.  The Fog Fest in Pacifica was the cheesiest event I ever lived a block away from.

45.  Watching people get hit unexpectedly by waves while standing at the railing in front of our house in Pacifica was always entertaining.

46.  I love living in Las Vegas too.

47.  I wish I could live in SanFranciscoLasVegas.

48.  I think fancy Las Vegas buffets are such great ways to try new kinds of food.

49.  Eating the same thing all the time bores me.

50.  I grew up in, like, omigawd, fer shur, the Valley.

51.  I was in high school when the Valley Girl song came out.

52.  My softball all-star team won the national tournament in 1978.

53.  I’m still bitter about my college softball career, so don’t even get me started…

54.  Okay, I’m not really *that* bitter, I guess.

55.  I’ve never been to any of my high school reunions.

56.  I wish I knew what everyone from high school was doing and what they looked like, without having to go to a reunion.

57.  I don’t like getting dressed up.

58.  I love tennis shoes.

59.  If I had lots of money, I would have many many pairs of tennis shoes.

60.  I never thought too much about politics until I realized I was gay.

61.  Now, I’m really disappointed in the politics of the US.

62.  I’d make a really great Canadian, except for that snow thing.

63.  My mom hates when I say stuff like that.

64.  My African Grey calls my name all day long - “Hi, Nancy-mom.  Hi, Nancy-mom.  Hi, Nancy-mom!”

65.  I love having my hair cut.

66.  I don’t generally like long hair on men or women, except Angelina Jolie.

67.  I’m kind of messy, but I can’t stand to have dirty hands.

68.  I hate reading instruction manuals.

69.  I hate dust, but I hate cleaning dust more.

70.  I work from home.

71.  I hate getting up early or having a schedule.

72.  I have carpal tunnel, back problems and maybe fibromyalgia.

73.  I wish I could find a magic pill to feel like I did when I was a kid.

74.  I wonder if all of these things tell anyone anything about me.

75.  Most of my friends are online.

76.  I love Starbucks.

77.  I wish Starbucks would make bubble tea.

78.  Full body laser hair removal would make me really happy.

79.  The House of Blues at Mandalay Bay is my favorite place for concerts.

80.  I spend most of my day online.

81.  After only one season, I have an unnatural love of fantasy football.

82.  The Daily Show makes me so very happy and feel not so alone.

83.  I have to always put my left shoe/sock on before my right shoe/sock.

84.  I’m right-handed, but play pool left-handed because I learned how to hold the stick by watching my left-handed brother.

85.  My parents sold the house that they owned for 44 years and that I grew up in, less than two months ago.

86.  I loved that house and will forever pretend that it’s still ours.

87.  I wish I ate better and worked out more.

88.  Leigh-Ann and I have been together almost eight years.

89.  We never fight.

90.  I’m a crappy in-person relationship fighter anyway.  I’m more likely to just pout.

91.  Rosie O’Donnell once called me on the phone (after IMing me on AOL) because she was

mad at me.  Okay, she called because I asked her to verify that it was her.  Then we IMed.

92.  It was weird.

93.  I probably comment on other people’s blogs too much.

94.  I didn’t think writing 100 things would be as difficult as it is.

95.  Once I get to 100, I’ll probably realize I’ve forgotten 100 other things.

96.  I think the world would be a better place without religion.

97.  I’m pro-choice.

98.  I’m in favor of the death penalty.

99.  I think online shopping is the best invention ever.

100.  I think everyone should write 100 things about themselves.

101.  I forgot one important thing - I love love love to read.  I thank my mom for loving books and taking us to the library when we were kids.  One of my brothers loves to read and the other two don’t.  David & I both had Mrs. Miller for first grade and she wanted her kids to read.  She praised us for reading and to this day, we read pretty much anything we can get our hands on.  Mrs. Miller seemed like 100 years old when we both had her for first grade, so I’m sure she probably isn’t alive anymore, but I sure I appreciate that woman for passing on such an important passion to her classes.  She told me that she could spend hours listening to me read aloud, even though I was only six and couldn’t have been all that great.  But, she made me feel great and I’ve never forgotten that.  Sometimes I forget my own name, but I’ll never forget Mrs. Miller.  Kinda curmudgeonly, but well-meaning and a terrific teacher.  So, Nevada Avenue School in Canoga Park, you hired a great inspiration for kids.

  1. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading it and, yes, to #74.  For some reason, I find your sharing #65 extra special and intimate. I enjoy reading “100 Things About Me” posts. I’ve never written one myself; I don’t have a blog. Guess I could just do it for myself like a diary thing though.

  2. You should start a blog.  Start it with the 100 Things entry.  You could start a Blogger blog in less than five minutes, it’s that easy.

I’ve never had a diary.  I tried to start one once when I was a kid.  I wrote for a couple of days and got bored.  I kind of regret not doing it now, now that my memory is going at the advanced age of 40. smile

  3. Number 40 made me laugh.  Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners is my “boyfriend”!  I think that he is adorable when he steals a base.

You know what is funny, I watch the Daily Show for the exact same reason.

How cute is your Afican Grey?  One of our birds calls out “Peek-Y-Boo” whenever she sees us.  It makes me feel loved!

I agree that you would make a great Canuck!

  4. I love your list! That must have been so cool to be national champs in HS Softball… We love softball in our family. (But my daughter won’t let me catch her pitches when she practices, she thinks that I will get hurt. That’s how much of an athlete I am!)

I love the food in Vegas too… Yum! And Rosie?! How awesome is that? Do you still IM her?

  5. Lassa, when Rosie called, it wasn’t exactly for cheery reasons.  She was mad at me.  But, to her credit, she actually wrote to me to tell me why.  Mostly, I think she just wasn’t thrilled with the sudden fame and the focus on her, uh, personal life.  This was during the first season of her show.  I haven’t had any contact with her since then and she probably wouldn’t know who I was.  Then again, I did have a pretty unique AOL s/n, so maybe she would remember.

It wasn’t my HS softball team that won the championship, it was my (dorkily named) Miss Softball America team.  It *was* really cool though.  I lived and breathed softball until I was in my early 20’s.

  6. Flippy, I like the name Flippy, so there. I never wanted to know 100 things about you and you sort of cheated, not only with the 101 moment but there were, like, at least five things in 101.

It’s okay, I like cheaters especially if they are in Vegas. Right?

    Smooch to the Flippy!
    Hell to the Yeah!

  7. I LOVE that you LOVE #65!!!  Yay!  #65 on MY list would be that I love doing YOUR hair!  (Leigh-ann too!) Shhhh...don’t tell anyone, but you guys are my FAVORITES!!!

     on  08/15  at  04:33 AM
  8. I’m am SO telling everyone at the salon that we’re your favorites.  The other day, I was thinking about a pink or purple tipped mohawk.  I wonder how long it would take to grow out if I hated it.

  9. Some things we have in common besides the name: I love chocolate raspberry, sushi, Starbucks, and trying new foods, I’m lazy, I hate to argue and almost won’t, I had a relatively perfect childhood, I read a lot of momblogs, I love to read books, I don’t like getting dressed up, I haven’t been to any high school reunions, I’m pro-choice, I love the Daily Show.  Where we differ most: I’ve never been any kind of jock, and I’ve never been phoned or IMed by a celebrity.  Not YET anyway.  If I had enough money, I would be eccentric and not wear shoes at all.  But I like tennis shoes if I have to wear shoes.

  10. I’m guessing that Dave and Glenn are your brothers? Of course they are, because I recognize Kyle, Michael and Zack. Also, I’m not real sure how I came across this page, but thought to myself, What a small world!

  11. Hi Nancy, I liked #101. I had Mrs. Miller in first grade in 1970. Awesome lady!
I thought I remembered you but I looked a pics of your house and it doesn’t look familiar. I lived on Hackney Street and went to Nevada from 1970-1975.
    Cheers!

  12. Flippy,

We definitely have some similarities but the having to put the left sock and shoe on before the right one really stuck out. I had no idea anyone else HAD to do that. basil

  13. Hey ....  Love the sock thing… and the arguing online thing… well, I miss when I used to think you were the devil.  grin

  14. You are totally, ARE LIKE, totally awesome. Can’t WAIT to meet you!!!
