Four More Sleeps Until Surgery

The surgeon’s office called this morning to move my surgery up two days, from next Friday to Wednesday.  There are a couple of good things about the change.  First, the surgery is a couple hours later, so if I get up really really early (before 6), I’m allowed to have a light breakfast.  Then, I can go back to bed and snooze for a while.  I have to be at the hospital at 1:30p, for a 3:30p surgery, I guess.  The other good thing about moving the date up is that I’ll stop thinking about it and get it over with.  Still, I’d so hoped to remain the only person in my family to not have surgery.  I had a good run of 41 years, while my brothers all had surgery as kids or teenagers.  Oh well, I suppose it was bound to happen.  I don’t know too many people who haven’t had surgery.

The bad things about moving the date up; one, OMIGAWD, it’s TWO DAYS SOONER!; two, because of the later surgery time, I hope they’re not tempted to keep me overnight.  I don’t want to stay at the hospital, nor do I want to have pay to stay there.  For what it costs, Leigh-Ann and I could spend a weekend in a fancy room on the Strip.  Also, yeah, I’m a little, uh, concerned.  I don’t like new things.  Someone sticking a scalpel in my back, that’s new.  Although, having needles stuck in my back...old hat.  An almost comfortable experience.  A 6k waste of money in my case, but otherwise not a terribly bad experience.

I feel like I should start cleaning like a fiend.  My post-surgery restrictions regarding cleaning are rather strict.  I think I’m not allowed to vacuum for like five years.  Luckily, I’m used to that already.  I’m not supposed to drive either, but we have two grocery stores that deliver, so that isn’t too much of a problem.  One of the scary things was something about starting out sitting for only five minutes.  Five minutes?  I have a fantasy baseball team to run, blogs to read, message boards to run, news to read, etc.  I can’t do that in five minutes.  I hope most of these restrictions really are referring to people who have major back surgery.  This is my particular surgery - a microdiscectomy. It’s in the minor leagues of back surgery.

So Much, Yet So Boring

I have so much to write about the past week or so, but it’s all so boring.  Basically, it’s all surgery preparations.  Going to doctors, getting lab work, and then more lab work, and then another doctor’s appointment, then to the pharmacy (hey, I did fulfill my deductible with the last prescriptions), then to the hospital for pre-admission paperwork.  It’s all been made so much better by the sinus headache I’ve had for the past two days.  A headache that will just NOT go away.  So anyway, after my headache goes away and I feel a little better, I’m going to whine about tedious errands.  Whoa, such totally fun reading for you.

Oh, and I’m going to complain about two stupid black cats who fight (the others are all very well behaved, especially the kittens, who are great mood enhancers), the Leafs not making the playoffs, the jerks who are mean to Tie (the Leaf, not the kitten), neverending traffic congestion, the price of gas, the fact that I beat Helly by half a point in fantasy hockey to roar into third place and that Yahoo doesn’t give little pictures of trophies if you’re in a league with fewer than six teams.  That’s so crappy.  I wanted my fantasy trophy for my fantasy trophy collection.  But anyway, ugh, this headache!

Yummy New Products

These are just delicious!  I recommend them highly.

An interesting new product - Coca-Cola Blak.  Now, I’m a Pepsi person, so I may not be the right person to review this new concoction.  It really is just a weird combination of Coke & coffee.  The little bottles are nice.  It isn’t terrible, but I don’t need to buy any more of it.

early evening

Today Is A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

First of all, tax day (even though it’s been extended to Monday), ‘nuf said.  Then, the Leafs doing a really fabulous job of wiping the ice with the hated Sens, 5-1.  But the thrill of victory was so short that it could be measured in minutes.  Right after the Leafs game was over, Center Ice switched to the Hurricanes/Lightning game.  The Lightning won in overtime, to eliminate the Leafs from the playoffs.  It’s so sad.  They were playing so well.  Now, there are only two more games left in the season.  Very very sad. :(

Also very sad, but more pertinent to real life.  Today is the day that our favorite neighbors are moving away.  How will we ever be able to replace friendly, cute, strong (thanks Matt, for all the “manly” things), nice, just social enough, hockey loving, Buffy & Angel loving, neigbhors?  I don’t think it can be done.  We got lucky for five years, and now we’re being punished with the unknown.  Actually, the unknown is probably good, because that means new neighbhors haven’t moved in yet.  We’re sure going to miss Matt & Amy...and Bosley & Ariel.  We’ll have to make plans to meet occasionally in the middle...for hockey games or concerts.
